Las Vegas Travel Tips

sydney on Jul 31st 2009

Headed to the sparkling Nevada city that never, ever sleeps? Vegas is one of my favorite destinations, and I’m hoping to get back there soon. I’ve learned a few things along the way, so here are my tips:

It can get chilly. While it’s pretty balmy late into the evening in Las Vegas, around 2 or 3 a.m. it can be cold. So, if you’re planning on hitting the clubs or walking around outside in the early hours of the morning, make sure you have a light jacket. It has also been known to snow on the Strip in the winter, so be sure you pack accordingly for the season you’re going in. Continue Reading »

Hot Hot Heat: Fire Island

sydney on Jul 30th 2009

When New York City gets unbearably hot, many gays and lesbians head to Fire Island. Why? First, it’s only about 60 miles away to this beautiful stretch of coastline, sandy beaches and nature. It’s a federally protected area, and it’s official name is the Fire Island National Seashore. It’s full of sand dunes, hiking trails, great hotels, restaurants and bars, nude beaches and camping spots. Continue Reading »

Lesbian Cruises

sydney on Jul 28th 2009

There is nothing better than lounging on a huge cruise ship, eating great meals and sipping on cocktails, and enjoying all a luxury liner has to offer.

oliviacruiseThe most established lesbian cruise company is definitely Olivia. You can pick from totally singles lesbian cruises, or a mix of singles and couples. On a mixed singles and couples Olivia cruise, you’ll wear a different colour wrist band if you’re single, so other people on the cruise know you’re traveling solo. As well, some mixed cruises will have separate dining rooms so the singles can mix and match. Continue Reading »

Snapshot: Gay St. Barths Beaches

sydney on Jul 25th 2009

A few people have asked me about the “gay scene” in St. Barths, and I have to be honest – there isn’t much of one. Going to St. Barths in the Caribbean is all about relaxation and rejuvenation, not hitting up the gay bar scene. If you want to read about some of the hotels, restaurants and things to do, check out my gay St. Barths post.

stbarths2St. Barths is unique in that it is not as lush as the other Caribbean Islands like Martinique or St. Kitts. St. Barths is really all about the beaches, all 14 of them. See white sand that stretches for miles, and uncrowded spots that are public and free. The beaches at Lorient and Marigot are favored by families, you’ll have to hike over a sand dune to get to Saline (but it’s worth it), Toiny is more wildly beautiful, Petit Cul de Sac is one of the quietest and most secluded. One of the easiest beaches in St. Barths to get to is Shell Beach, accessible by foot from Gustavia, while the hardest to reach is Colombier – you’ll have to hike for a good half hour or take a boat from Gustavia.

Elton John Leaving Las Vegas

sydney on Jul 23rd 2009

It’s just been announced that Elton John will end his Las Vegas run in The Red Piano on April 22, 2010. His popular show, The Red Piano, is in Caesar’s Palace. April 22 will mark his 214st performance in the vast Colisseum Theatre. It debuted in February 2004, and was set to video montages created by the fashion photographer and director David LaChappelle.

Elton John had originally signed on for about 75 shows in Las Vegas, but his run was extended because of the demand. Canadian star Celine Dion also had her show at the Colisseum, and so did Cher and Bette Midler.

So, if you want to check out Elton John in Las Vegas, get on it before April of next year!
