Gay Tropics: Saba

sydney on Jun 4th 2009

Disclaimer: Saba is not a party destination. You won’t find gay bars, gay events or gay beaches. Saba, a small island in the Caribbean, is all about getting in touch with nature, enjoying the hospitality of friendly locals and spending the afternoons exploring the village stores and awwwing at the gingerbread house-inspired cottages.

Saba is unique in that it is well known for being incredibly gay-friendly. Many other Caribbean hotspots have earned a bad rep for not being accepting of gay visitors or just downright discouraging gay travel. Who wants to get the evil eye from conservative tourists, or stay at a hotel or resort where the staff are rude?

This island near St. Maarten has just 90 hotel rooms and a population of only 1,500. The biggest draw of Saba seems to be its underwater adventures. The sea creatures and plant life are supposedly amazing – it’s estimated that around 80 percent of tourists come mainly to check out the sea life. If you’re not into the underwater expeditions, there are tons of activities for the non-water sport enthusiasts. Beautiful hiking trails like the Mount Scenery Stairway take hikers to the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, up, up and away to a 20 acre cloud forest. There is an island history museum, cute little shops and restaurants to enjoy while walking around the island.

Past & Future of the Island

A Dutch territory since 1816, English is widely spoken on the island. In the next year, the Netherlands Antilles – the political entity which Saba is a part of, will disband. This means that St. Maarten and Curacao will establish a semi-autonomous relationship with the Netherlands. Sister islands Bonaire and St. Eustatius will be integrated into the Netherlands, which means – gay marriage will likely soon be a part of Saba. So, if a marital union is in your future, Saba could be a gorgeous place to say your “I do’s.”
