Lesbian Fort Lauderdale: Lips Restaurant
sydney on Sep 16th 2009
I’m betting that most people haven’t had the restaurant experience that is drag dining. Lips Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale is a popular spot that features drag shows such as Dinner With the Divas, where you’ll nosh with Bette Midler, Madonna and many more celebrities. Tuesday is drag karaoke, while Retro Superstar Sundays are all about glamour. There’s something going on no matter which day you stop by, although I do think they are closed on Mondays for private parties.
The menu is quite large, with everything from Surf and Turf to lasagne to quesadillas. Try the frozen cosmos, which are often on sale for something like $3. You will pay a $5 or $7 cover fee for shows (except on Tuesday and Wednesday nights), which will be added to your bill.
Lips in Florida is located at 1421 East Oak Park Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. For event info and menu, see their website.

Womenfest in Key West, Florida
sydney on Aug 8th 2009
Womenfest Key West has been around for 20 years now, and this year it will be from September 8-13. There are tons of activities planned for Womenfest 2009: dance parties, clothing optional pool parties, film, live music, comedy, and even competitive bull riding. Also, let’s not forget that it’s in Key West, which means access to beautiful beaches and gay clubs (see my post on Key West).
On Tues., Sept. 8, Womenfest Keywest kicks off with a pool party with live entertainment, dancing, and an open bar. Most of the Womenfest activities centre around the water: jet skiing, Wind & Wine Sunset sails, snorkeling and dolphin watching. Make a love connection with speed dating on Pearl’s Patio, or take part in a group commitment ceremony champagne brunch. There are literally dozens of events and activities to take part in, whether you’re looking for adventure, tranquility or partying! Also, on the guest list this year are: comedian Dana Goldberg, Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis, and actress Sharon Gless (Cagney & Lacey, Switch).
For a full listing of events, visit Womenfest.

Gay Key West
sydney on Jul 19th 2009
Key West is one of the top gay destinations, and really caters to the LGBT community. Unlike other gay hotspots like Fort Lauderdale and Palm Springs that aren’t warm year round, Key West is balmy every season. It’s been a favourite for gays and lesbians since the early 70’s, and attracts gay travelers of all types, from young professionals to gay retirees. Continue Reading »

Gay Florida: Miami Beach Nightlife
sydney on Jun 28th 2009
We know that Key West is known for its many gay resorts, and we covered Fort Lauderdale, but what about Miami Beach? If you visited gay Florida and Miami Beach in the 90’s, it was right in the height of numerous gay clubs opening in the Art Deco area, along with numerous gay friendly hotels and stores. Gay Florida: Fort Lauderdale – Really?
sydney on Jun 25th 2009
When you think of Fort Lauderdale, maybe you automatically think “Spring Break.” I know for me it conjures up thoughts of too many college students and too much Cuervo. However, there’s a lot more to it than that, and Fort Lauderdale travel has really grown up. Let’s call it a travel transformation. Greater Fort Lauderdale has about 100 gay-owned establishments – hotels, clubs, restaurants, and gay beach areas. It’s become one of the premier US gay and lesbian travel destinations. The Wilton Manor suburb is the centre of gay Fort Lauderdale. This is where most of the gay shops, hotels and bars are, although the surrounding areas are not too shabby, either. Continue Reading »
