This year’s Pride Weekend in Toronto snuck up on me. I think I’ve been focusing a lot on figuring out Vancouver Pride, so much so that I had a moment of disbelief when I saw it was this week – June 19 to 28. Toronto has been doing gay pride celebrations since the 70’s, and each year draws more than 1.2 million participants and spectators. Most of the hoopla takes place in the Church Street area, right around the Wellesley Street intersection.

If you’re in Toronto on June 12, through to the 21st there’s the Queer West Fest, right in the middle of the Queer West Village in the West End along Queen Street. (Try saying that three times fast). I like the idea of a more grassroots alternative and “less corporate” Gay Pride event, but I still think the regular Pride events are better, as they have such a rich history and are truly original. But, if you’re around and want to check out both, why not?

There’s the Kick-Off Launch Party on June 19th at the popular Church St. gay bar Woody’s. Fun fact: Did you know that a lot of the Queer as Folk scenes were shot here?

The Pride 2009 Community Street Fair and Marketplace again goes throughout Pride Weekend. It’s fun to browse the art, do some shopping for some really unique items, learn more about community organizations, and eat great food. It will be set up in the Gay Village, along Church Street and Wellesley Street East, from 11 am until 8 pm.

Got brats? Family Pride is over at the grounds of Church Street Junior Public School for both days of Pride Weekend, and it’s the usual assortment of kid friendly stuff: includes crafts, games, children’s entertainment, a family brunch (Sunday) and a picnic on Saturday.

Do not miss the Toronto Dyke March (like you would) on Saturday, June 27, at 2 pm. Dykes start a marching on Church and Hayden streets and all along Bloor, south down Yonge, east on Wood, and finally back up part of Church Street.

I hate goodbyes: The festival is over for another year on Sunday, June 28, at 2 pm, with the Toronto Gay Pride Parade. The procession starts at the intersection of Bloor Street East and Church Street, west to Yonge Street, south to Gerrard Street, and east to Church Street. There is stiff competition for a number of parade participant awards for the best hats, costumes, dancing and more. Of course you can still squeeze in another night of partying for the finale, with many local bars and pubs holding Pride nights, events and specials.
