Gay Florida: Miami Beach Nightlife
sydney on Jun 28th 2009
We know that Key West is known for its many gay resorts, and we covered Fort Lauderdale, but what about Miami Beach? If you visited gay Florida and Miami Beach in the 90’s, it was right in the height of numerous gay clubs opening in the Art Deco area, along with numerous gay friendly hotels and stores.
Miami Beach is located about an hour south of Fort Lauderdale, and just around three hours north of Key West. South Beach is gay central in Miami Beach, home to most of Miami’s gay community as well as lots of local tourist attractions. South Beach has continuously evolved: previously, the luxury hotels and clubs along South Beach were flashy hotspots, then it was a low rent area for poor retirees. Now, vacant buildings have been snapped up, locations renovated, and it is once again a whole new gay travel area. While you won’t find many gay-only lodging options or restaurants, gay travelers are so common here and make up the majority of the local business, so you’ll find anywhere you frequent to be extraordinarily gay friendly.
If you head down to South Beach, you will find an energetic, fashionable mix of circuit partygoers, lipstick lesbians, muscle boys and gay couples, all looking to have fun in one of the most beautiful locations in the world.
The Art Deco District is the 800 buildings between 6th and 23rd streets and from Ocean Drive West to Lennox Ave. Famous for its gay nightlife, whether you’re looking for fun at the classic bars like Score, Palace or Twist, or want to check out one of the constantly changing bars and clubs that pop up, Miami has something for you. Keep in mind, Miami is a late-night city, so if you arrive at a bar early you may be disappointed to find it empty. Have a few drinks at a casual spot and remember that dance venues do not get crowded until after midnight.
