Gay San Francisco: Rex Hotel Review

sydney on Jun 19th 2009

The Hotel Rex is right in the midst of all the bustle of the San Francisco theatre district. Located in Union Square, it is one of the premier San Francisco hotels, and it was inspired by the art salons of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Paintings of famous writers adorn the walls, and there are smooth jazz sessions and poetry readings in the library bar, if that’s your thing. It’s mine, so this was one of my favorite things about my stay here.

My second favourite thing at the Rex: complimentarly wine at 5 pm every day. This gives you a chance to chat with hotel guests in the hotel bar.

Step outside, and you’ve got a plethora of spending options: Barney’s, Sak’s, and John Varvatos, to name a few. Get the spa treatment at Elizabeth Arden or Cowboys and Angels. And, don’t forget Castro’s is a mere 10 minutes away.

The rooms: The rooms are a bit on the small side, which is the norm for most of the trendy hotels in San Fran. The rooms are decked out in gorgeous Provencal colour schemes, antique furniture, with Internet access. We tried the Cafe Andree downstairs, the perfect place to grab a drink, catch up over brunch or enjoy an ethnic-inspired dinner.

Customer service: It’s a refreshing difference from the cookie cutter services you get at a chain hotel. The Rex is also considered a “green” hotel, which means they utilize water and energy conservation programs, recyling and waste minimization.
